At Design Interviews
Interview with Matthew Heywood : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Matthew Heywood : I wanted to design a very modern and contemporary house, but I also wanted it to be contextual to the surrounding countryside and the village of Yalding. The house is inspired by the location. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Matthew Heywood : Creating a building of great quality which is in some way timeless. I also wanted to design something which challenges peoples assumptions on the value of modern house design. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Matthew Heywood : The house is currently for sale. I wish to build on the experiences of this project and make it the starting point for a series of domestic projects over the next few years, perhaps with the intention of publishing the works as a study in modern house design. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Matthew Heywood : Where does design start and stop. The project took 2 years from start to finish and the design is not 100% complete until it is fully realised. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Matthew Heywood : This is a very personal project that I initiated myself to establish that it could be done. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Matthew Heywood : Influences are wide ranging and impossible to list, but the design is very much mine. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Matthew Heywood : Anyone who wants to live in a large beautiful house in a wonderful setting. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Matthew Heywood : I wanted the design to have integrity. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Matthew Heywood : Several years ago my mother was trying to relocate to the South East of England from Scotland. My brother and I were finding it difficult to find a house that matched my mothers needs, and we briefly explored the option of buying a piece of land (next to my brothers house) and building a new home for my mother. The project became know as Trish House (Trish being my mothers name). We eventually found a property and the new house was never built. Although the house in Yalding was never intended to be a home for my mother, somehow the "Trish House" name stuck. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Matthew Heywood : A pen and a computer. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Matthew Heywood : The angles involved in the structure and windows. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Matthew Heywood : Finding a company who could fabricate the angular opening windows was tricky. Initially I hadn't realised how hard this was to fabricate. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Matthew Heywood : A great many things too numerous to mention. It will be a terrible day if we ever stop learning. .
